Are We Experiencing a Soft Landing?

A superheated economy coming out of the pandemic lead to a surge in inflation not seen in over 3 decades. Central banks across the world increased the cost of borrowing to curb this inflation, but the fear was this would eventually lead to recession as demand for goods and services declined. However, as we move into a new year these recession fears are dwindling behind a surprisingly strong labor market, improving inflation, and a stabilization in the house market. A soft landing? It is looking increasingly likely.

Presented by: Damon Runberg, State Economist at Business Oregon

Damon supports the statewide economic development goals by tracking and analyzing economic
indicators critical to Oregon’s workers and businesses. He also evaluates the effectiveness of Oregon’s economic development strategies and incentives. Prior to working with Business Oregon, Damon was the Regional Economist with the Oregon Employment Department for the East Cascades of Oregon for nearly 12 years. Damon received his Master of Public Policy from Oregon State University (Corvallis) where he specialized in econometric analysis and natural resource economics.
